2014 was another busy year for Gauged Solutions, working with the APS, as we were asked to continue with the workshops we had ran in 2013. The workshops were based around managing Construction, Design and Management (CDM) in a mechanical and electrical environment.
The APS is the UK’s main professional body for CDM co-ordinators. It has members across the whole of the United Kingdom and the workshops that were delivered were as far afield as Teesside, Northern Ireland, Glasgow, London, Southampton and the Midlands.
As mechanical and electrical environments are specialised areas and can be complex, the purpose of the workshop was to give CDM co-ordinators a broad overview of the potential hazards and how to mitigate against them during maintenance and construction activities.
The learning outcomes from the workshops were:
- Gain an understanding as to the types of installations where the most common M & E type activities are undertaken
- Explain what a CDM–C should be aware of for these type of environments
- Understand how hazardous industries prefer to appoint M & E contractors
- Describe the different legislative requirements for M & E work activities
- Outline what questions a CDM-C should ask in order to ensure their client is appropriately advised
- Understand how proposed safe systems of work including permits are established and maintained by the Principal Contractor throughout the M & E project
Overall Gauged Solutions delivered the workshop to over 200 members of the APS, and they were all received with excellent feedback.
