We are delighted  that our client, FCC Environment, one of the UK’s leading resource and waste management businesses and a company known for its safety, health, environmental and quality initiatives, has won the prestigious British Safety Council International Safety Award 2020 for their Wychavon operations.

The award follows a five-year success record with their ‘Because…’ Behavioural Based Safety Programme at their Wychavon operations, a programme with was devised, developed and delivered by Gauged Solutions.

Working on behalf of Wychavon District Council, FCC Environment undertakes domestic and municipal waste collection services and street cleaning operations. Some 70 staff are employed to deliver the services, including a large number of collections operatives such as drivers and loaders working across 25 different vehicles.

The ‘Because' programme is based on Gauged Solutions’ 6 Pillars to achieving an effective safety culture and focusses on the importance of leadership, engagement and education at all levels within an organisation in striving to reduce health and safety risks and improve their culture.

By focussing on proactive measures to monitor and measure safety performance through actively monitoring operational crews, giving positive feedback directly to the crews in real time to inspire and encourage further efforts; and where areas for improvement are identified, by ensuring constructive feedback and on-site coaching, FCC Environment have witnessed significant positive changes, including:-

  • Motor vehicle accidents fell by over 36 per cent

In receiving the British Safety Council’s highest ranking in health, safety and wellbeing in the International Safety Awards 2020 the team were praised for the robust standardised training programme and effective behavioural-based safety programme. Other factors that the awards’ judges singled the contract out for included managerial staff’s behavioural observations and regular safety conversations, all part of the behavioural-based safety programme introduced by Gauged Solutions.
